This animation shows the global advance and retreat of daily snow cover along with daily sea ice surface temperature over the Northern Hemisphere from September 2002 through May 2003. (31 MB -- no audio) Credit: NASA Although NASA satellites have been taking pictures of the Earth since the 1960s, today''s advanced satellites allow scientists to see snow and ice in great detail. They can even see how much sea ice has melted in the Arctic and track how far individual glaciers have melted and retreated. Scientists at NASA don''t forecast snowfall, but instead look at the snow that has fallen and compare it to previous years or months to get an idea of how the winter climate may be changing. Image to left: This snow-covered lake is located at the National Park Service''s Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in California. Credit: National Park Service On Monday, Dec. 19, with Christmas just 6 days away, snow is reported on the ground from New England extending west through New York State and into the Midwest stretching to Iowa, northern Missouri, Kansas and much of Colorado. There are spotty ground snows in central Utah, central Nevada, and along eastern California''s Sierra Mountains. In the Pacific Northwest, central and eastern Washington and Oregon are covered with snow. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas are almost totally covered with snow. Instruments onboard NASA''s Terra and Aqua satellites look at snow on the ground. These satellites see almost every snow-covered spot in the world every day. Those instruments, called the Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), take very clear pictures of snow on the ground and can help scientists determine if the winter is snowier than normal. By Dec. 23, wherever MODIS sees snow on the ground, it is likely there will be snow cover on Christmas Day. Typically, the National Weather Service issues a forecast the week of Christmas to see where the new snowfall may most likely occur. Image to right: This snow map was created using data from NASA''s MODIS satellite instrument. The image shows the areas of New England that were snow covered on Dec. 14, 2005.The colors indicate different things: white=snow, pink=cloud, blue=ocean, cyan=ice covered water, green=land. Credit: NASA More than 40 percent of the Earth''s land surface in the Northern Hemisphere can be covered with snow during the winter months. Many areas of the world rely on the snowmelt for irrigation and drinking water. In the western United States, mountain snow-packs contribute up to 75 percent of all year-round surface water supplies. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor snow-packs closely throughout the winter and spring for assessment of water supply and flooding potential. MODIS data have proven useful in this. Naturally, the further north you are for Christmas, the better your chances will be for a white Christmas. If you''re desperate for that white Christmas, plan on spending it in the Cascade Mountains of the west, the Rocky Mountains, or the White or Green Mountains in New England.
